SANS SOUCI REVIVAL PROJECT

We are in search of community leaders, community / economic development practitioners, funders, volunteers, and other partners to provide the following assistance to the revival of the historic Sans Souci:

Phase One

1. Research the business models of organizations similar to the proposed Sans Souci, including sustainability, management, programs, fundraising, capital campaigns and governance. (Uncle Tom’s Community Centre, Community Arts Project, Guga S’thebe, etc.). Develop short and long-term goals.

2. Begin fundraising research & analysis. Develop comprehensive list of potential foundations, business sponsors, individual contributors, high-level donors, corporate partners, and program-related investments to provide funding for the construction and creation of programs for the Sans Souci.

3. Identify and contact potential partners (e.g. JDA, Blue IQ, Gauteng Dept. of Sports Recreation Arts & Culture, Film Resource Board, Ochre Media, et al.); initiate public-private partnerships (PPPs). Determine roles. How and to what extent are they involved?

4. Determine key participants/stakeholders and form an interim advisory or task force committee to begin communications, timeframes, etc.

5. Determine the ideal legal & business structures for a new, independent Sans Souci organization (not for profit or for profit?) and facilitate the administrative tasks necessary for incorporation. Draft mission statement and organizational mandates.

6. Explore the SAHRA / Gauteng Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (GPHRA) criteria for naming the Sans Souci as a heritage site. How or will it affect stated municipal plans? Can the Sans Souci be built on another site in Kliptown?

7. Develop & complete the first draft of a 5-year Sans Souci business plan to be presented and discussed within a community context.

8. Revise business plan draft according to consultations and present to the Kliptown community and Sans Souci body of advisors and directors.

Phase Two

1. Present & discuss Sans Souci business plans to/with the organization’s Advisory Committee/Task Force, incl. other community leaders, business persons and local funding agencies and City Council.

2. Revise business plan & assumptions based upon community feedback and comments.

3. Register the Sans Souci business organization and the company’s Board of Trustees; research local attorneys and accountants as well as other professional service providers and vendors.

4. Establish administrative location/offices for Sans Souci organization, basic staffing, interns, and/or learnerships.

5. Establish marketing and publicity presence (web, print, word of mouth).

6. Begin solicitation of funding from sponsors, foundations, etc.

7. Establish partnerships with area cultural, educational, and business institutions.

8. Plan and produce events to generate awareness of the Sans Souci Revival Project for the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Freedom Charter celebrations at Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication.

Phase Three

1. Possible architectural plan competition to encourage local professionals of color to draft plans for the Sans Souci. Find partners, determine prizes, generate publicity, begin competition by opening call for requests.

2. Secure funding commitments and pledges for construction & building and for general operating expenses.

3. Set target dates for ground-breaking, construction timeframes, and construction completion.

4. Develop staffing temporary facility/office for Sans Souci administration; begin recruitment and intern/learnership/volunteer staffing as well as creating job descriptions

Phase Four

1. Publicity campaign begins.

2. Ground breaking ceremony with staff and local officials, funding agents, sponsors, etc.

3. Construction begins.

4. Staff training and development begins.

5. Initial programming- 1st season budget and concepts.
